So You Bought a Home, Now What Header4 Ways You Can Support Your Local Businesses

So You Bought a Home, Now What HeaderPurchasing a new home is so much fun! Don't forget to take care of some important document changes and technicalities before you unpack everything.

Did you just purchase a home? Congratulations!

Purchasing a new home is such a fun time. Sure, there’s the stress of paperwork and moving, but now you have a new place to call your own and decorate as you please.

Before painting walls and unpacking boxes, there are routine tasks to tackle that will help you get settled in.

Connect the Utilities

You’ll want the lights to turn on when you flip the switch on moving day, so be sure to call as soon as possible and get the electricity set up under your name and billing information. Be sure to do this for all utilities, such as water and sewage, garbage, internet, etc.

Update Home Security

Updating and replacing safety features in your new home is a must!

Replace locks on all exterior doors and make sure windows latch and secure properly. If you have a privacy fence with a gate feature, ensure that it locks from the inside as well. If the garage can be opened with a code, change the code to a combination only your family knows.

Consider investing in a home security system. There are many options available to find the best fit for your needs and family.

Don’t forget to double-check the home’s smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector as well!

Change of Address & Mail

You want to make sure all your mail is going to the right place! Be sure to update all bills and subscriptions to your new address and make your family members aware for any snail mail or packages. Also consider having all your mail forwarded from your old address to your new one.

You can even take care of this online: https://moversguide.usps.com/mgo/disclaimer

Be sure to update your address for all billing and online payment purposes. Some other places to update your address may include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Driver’s License
  • Car Registration & Insurance
  • Bank, Credit Cards, Debit Cards
  • Place of Employment
  • Insurance Accounts

Once you have the technical moving tasks taken care of, it’s time to move onto the fun part! Unpacking, decorating and enjoying your new home. Take some time to learn the new space, have fun decorating, and make this place your very own.

Congratulations, homeowner!
