The end of summer is nearing and school has begun, but that doesn’t mean your fun has to be over just yet. There’s still plenty of time for a few weekend getaways before the weather gets too cold and the snow makes traveling difficult.

Where should you go though? As a Hoosier you have plenty of options, but here are 8 cheap Indiana weekend getaways you definitely need to know about.

Getaway 1


French Lick, Indiana

Located 140 miles southwest of Indianapolis and situated near the Hoosier National Forest, French Lick offers a variety of family friendly activities and adult only activities.

While visiting, you can mountain bike, hike, zip line, or golf at Valley Links Golf Course. If the weather is poor you can check out the year round indoor water park or the shops at French Lick-West Baden. From homemade fudge to chainsaw carvings, the area is full of unique stores. Don’t forget about the French Lick Casino if you’re looking for a night out without the kids.

Michigan City, Indiana

From marinas to wineries, you won’t be lacking in fun in Michigan City. The city has a zoo you can take the kids to, or if they like history you can take them to the Old Lighthouse Museum. For a night out alone, head over to Blue Chip Casino.

Madison, Indiana

Madison is a beautiful river town with lots of history and old museums. While there, make sure you visit the Lanier Mansion where you can explore and experience history as it was in the 1840s.

The town doesn’t only offer activities for history buffs.

Clifty Falls State Park is a great destination if you’re looking to be active for a day or two. The stony bed is filled with fossils and if you want to take any home there are collecting locations nearby.

Santa Claus, Indiana

There is endless fun in this south central town. You can canoe, explore caves, hit up museums, and even visit the well-known Holiday World Theme Park and Splashin’ Safari.

While in Santa Claus, you can dine in restaurants and stop in shops with names like Silent Night Café and Santa’s Candy Castle. Who doesn’t love Christmas all year round?

Nashville, Indiana

Located in Amish country, you can take a step back in time. Watch as flour is stone ground inside Bonneyville Mill, Indiana’s oldest fully-operating gristmill, or explore the Elkhart County Historical Museum, one of the top 10 local history museums in the state.

Shipshewana, Indiana

Twenty minutes from Bristol and also in the heart of Amish county lies Shipshewana. There are many great eateries in this quaint town including the well-known Blue Gate Restaurant, JoJo’s Pretzels, and for dessert the Hitching Post.

For activities, you can shop the Midwest’s largest Flea Market from May 5 – October 3, tour the back roads and view Amish farms, or ride the 108-year-old Dentzel Carousel at the Davis Mercantile.

Bloomington, Indiana

If you want to spend your weekend being active, Bloomington is the place to be. The city is a biker’s paradise and home to two major bicycling events: the Little 500 and the Hilly Hundred Tour.

To start your active weekend you can eat at the Bloomington Bagel Company, or the Village Deli which also serves a mean breakfast. To cool down, check out any of the many lakes in the area including the state’s largest inland lake, Lake Monroe. When you get hungry, you won’t be short of restaurants. Walk anywhere downtown and you’ll have a ton of choices.
